This exciting overland route from Kathmandu to Lhasa is regarded as one of the world's great journeys, on one of the world's highest roads. You'll pass by several 5,000m passes and witness spectacular scenery before arriving into Lhasa itself.
Your adventure begins in the vibrant and bustling city of Kathmandu, where we explore its crowded maze-like streets, temples and stupas before following the ‘Friendship Highway’ through lush green countryside and dramatic cliffs to the Tibetan border.
After border formalities, our journey continues onto the Nyalam Pass from where you are rewarded with excellent high mountain views.
En route to Shigatse, we make a stop to experience the holy atmosphere from inside the ancient Sakya Monastery before visiting Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat and burial site of the Panchen Lamas. On our way to Gyantse, we take time to visit Shalu Monastery, which is famous for the magnificent tiered Gyantse Kumbum; the largest chorten in Tibet and home to over 100,000 Buddhist images.
Our journey then sees us crossing the summit of the Kamba-La Pass and several hundred metres below lies the stunning Yamdrok-Tso, a stunning turquoise lake set amongst breathtaking scenery; this is also one of Tibet's most sacred lakes.
In Lhasa we spend two days exploring this ancient Buddhist capital and visit the famous Potala and Norbulingka palaces, the great Drepung Monastery and join the pilgrims in the bustling Barkhor Bazaar before taking a flight back to Nepal for a couple of nights in the Kathmandu Valley and a chance to reflect on an unforgettable journey through ‘forbidden’ Tibet.
A full day in Kathmandu is required to obtain your Tibetan Entry Permit from the Chinese Embassy. This (Day 2) must be a Monday, Wednesday or Friday.
