One of Nepal's classics, this trek follows the sacred Kali Gandaki River to the entrance to the Upper Mustang Valley. Between towering peaks and across numerous bridges, the trail along the Kali Gandaki winds its way up through picturesque villages, where Thakali hospitality is at it's highest. The trek culminates in a visit to the Pilgrimage town of Muktinath, sitting at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, followed by a spectacular flight back down the valley to Pokhara. Read more
We meet you at Kathmandu airport and transfer you from airport to hotel. Introduction to local area.
This morning you will have a pre-tour briefing before you go on a city tour of Kathmandu. We visit the many Temples and Palaces around Durbar Square and then climb the steep steps to Swayamabuth Stupa for some incredible views of Kathmandu and the surrounding valley. Later on, you have the opportunity to browse the local shops and enjoy dinner in one of the many restaurants.
This morning we make the journey by road to Pokhara. As soon as you leave the Kathmandu Valley, the route becomes more scenic as you pass by raging rivers with snow capped mountains in the background. Once in Pokhara, you have the rest of the day free to explore this lakeside town.
Today we drive you to Phedi where you'll begin your trek. Your first day is a gentle climb up to Pothana.
After leaving Pothana behind you trek through Tolka in the direction of Landruk. From here you cross the valley and begin the climb up to Ghandruk.
Today you'll trek through rhododendron and moss forests on the climb up to Tadapani. You should expect good views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhare in the distance.
Today you'll carry on trekking through the forests before reaching Banthani where the trail climbs steeply following a gorge all the way up to Ghorepani where you'll spend the night.
We'll start early today so you can reach Poon Hill (3210m) to watch an unforgettable sunrise over the Himalayan panorama. After breakfast, you start the long descent down to Tatopani crossing the Kali Gandaki river. Tatopani literally means ‘hot springs’ and you are free to relax and unwind in one of these after some hard days walking.
After tearing yourself away from the refreshing hot springs, the trail starts to climb again as you pass through Dana and Rukse. From here you'll pass through the world’s deepest gorge in-between Annapurna 1 and Dhaulagiri mountains and continue the climb to Ghasa (2000m).
From Ghasa, you start a steep climb up to Kalopani passing through Lete. Today's trail is mostly forested.
You'll follow the Kali Gandaki river for most of today's trekking. You then travel on to Tukche which was once an important trading town for goods from Tibet. It’s also possible to see the Dhaulagiri glacier and the Nilgiri range in the east. You stay overnight at Marpha (2667m).
After leaving Marpha, you have quite an easy walk on to Jomsom. As you keep on going past Jomsom, you drop down to the riverbed and follow the trail on to Eklai-Bhatti. You then climb through lush orchards on the approach to Kagbeni and the entrance to the upper Mustang valley.
Today you should aim to reach the Hindu pilgrimage site of Muktinath. You'll travel through the old fortress town of Jharkot where the views out to the valley are incredible. After visiting the temple complex, you re-trace your steps and spend the night in Jomsom.
With the trekking over, we transfer you to the airstrip at Jomsom where you will board your plane for the short yet spectacular flight back to Pokhara. The flight follows the Kali Gandaki valley most of the way. Overnight in Pokhara.
We have given you a free day in Pokhara today in case the flight from Jomsom was cancelled or the trek took longer than expected. The views from this lakeside town are fantastic and there is no shortage of fun to be had with other travellers.
An early morning start sees you take the road back to Kathmandu. Once back in the capital, you have the rest of the day free to catch up on any last minute shopping.
Your time is free today until we transfer you to the airport in time for your flight home.
We use a range of carefully selected hotels on our group departures. If you have specific requests for hotels, please ask for a private or tailor-made tour.
